Reykjavík Folk Dance Festival

Ásrún Magnúsdóttir has created new folk dances. It started out as project produced by The Festival called Artist on Loan. Ásrún was made available for loan via the Reykjavík City Libraries. Ásrún seeked assistance from borrowers, she wanted to place the borrowers’ dances on her body with the ambition of choreographing a new folk dance for the nation - and so she did. Since then she has created many different folk dances for many different nations, social groups and cities.

She wanted to know under what circumstances people dance, why some don’t dance, with whom people preferably dance with. She researched traditions, fashion and development of movements of folk dances through the ages and create from them a new symbol of unity. She has made new folk dance for people living in Reykjavík, people living in Akureyri (small city in the north of Iceland), people living in Warsaw and people living in Faroe Islands.
